Another Course Record

Hey....the Worlds may have helped me after all. Shot another 49 today. This time from the blue tees at Ford Park. Seven birdies, ten threes and a five on hole four. Shooting below fifty with several bad drives and missed putts makes me feel like I may have finally reached a higher level.

We'll see at the Shreveport Challenge next weekend.

Clyde Fant Mini

I played in the Tuesday Night Mini at Clyde Fant this week. Finished second in Open/Advanced with a 49....my course record. Almost everything worked...drives, approaches and putts. Very few mistakes....my best round ever. I changed two things....one physical and one mental. On the physical side I incorporated a rocking bow....it worked the night before in the back yard and it really worked Tuesday night. On the mental side I kept a "go for the kill" attitude all round long and did not let any sub-par shots get me down. One shot at a time....or as snipers say "one shot, one kill."

The mental outlook, if it works, may just be the key to a breakthrough. On putting, I'll just keep practicing with a positive, every-putt-goes-in thought process.

I may have to change the title of the blog....we'll see.

Finally

The last day....two rounds at Pleasant Hill. I woke up feeling a little stiff in my back...made it to the course and threw some putts and drives. As soon as the round started, my back began to hurt. On the first hole of the first round I missed the first putt...one I should have made. From then on I made thirteen straight threes before finishing with two fours. I finished the first with a 57...I was satisfied with that because it was the best I had played all week. During the round, my back pain had started effecting my play. I couldn't really get much on the drives and I was having trouble even bending down to pick up my discs.

The second round started with a famine-to-feast moment for me. Hole 16 is a hard dogleg right and I tried a forehand to follow the fairway. The drive ended up in the woods....all I had left was an escape shot that would leave me no closer to the pin. My third shot was around 120 feet on a slight downhill. I did not want to start this round with a four. I picked my target...a branch high and to the right of the basket....and threw right into the chains. That shot got me started on the round of the week for me. Dad showed up on the following hole and walked with me the rest of the round. I really think that this helped....he was there for me....kept my spirits up. On several holes I just had it going....long putts made....escapes from trouble....just plain old good play. Two more fours were ahead at the end of the round.....from mistakes made by me. The difference was that I added two's to match and offset those. I started throwing my "Ace" Star TL again and it is now officially back in the bag. The Star Leopard is back also.

I'll be leaving Kansas City on Sunday morning....and I'll be back.

Cliff Drive

Another up and down day at the Worlds. Cliff Drive is a long course that is approximately 1/3 wooded and 2/3 open. Again, the wooded got to me....I'm just good at hitting trees....even the ones I don't mean to hit. I'll cover the good things and then I'll just close this post....I have two rounds tomorrow...my last shot at redemption.

My scrambling/get out of trouble shots were on today. Several times I made good recovery shots when I could have lost more strokes than I actually did. I also had some good drives once I decided to actually put some effort into them. I threw the 150's a little today...the Boss did fine with hard snaps.

I may not finish as high as I had hoped....but this is just my first Worlds and I look forward to many more. I'm going to do as well as I can tomorrow.

Going Down

Today wasn't good for me....at least on the subject of disc golf. I fell to the bottom ten percent of participants. Rosedale Down under is in my past now. I hope I never see the course again. I really thought I stood a chance of moving up the leader board here. Nope....nada....done with.

I have played with some great people here. Kazuhiko Gomibuchi, from Japan, is a great opponent with a positive attitude. Communication was hard at times but I think we connected pretty well. Lee Hansen from Lincoln, Nebraska was another just plain old good guy. The most impressive was Mike Helm from Canon City, Colorado. Mike has made the final card in the last four World Championships but has not played in any of the final rounds. Mike's religious beliefs prevent him from working or playing on Saturdays. He has given up his spot each of the last four years to the next person in line. He told me that there are more important things in life than disc golf....faith and family came first....closely followed by disc golf. Mike is special.

Hopefully I'll move up the board tomorrow....but even if I don't, this has already been a great experience for me.

Day One

Rain came in late last night and stuck around all day today. My pool started late at Rosedale due to the previous pool taking 3-1/2 hours for their round. It all started out badly for me....bogey, double bogey, bogey on the first three holes. I never found the groove....just felt wrong all day. I did make some decent shots, but couldn't put together more than two successive pars. Even with an umbrella, both I and my discs got soaked....but that wasn't that much of a problem....I was able to dry the one that I was using for each drive.

Our round was long also...we started at 11:40 a.m. and finished at 3:30 p.m. Because of that, our second round (Down Under) was postponed until tomorrow. Now I'll be playing at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.....another long day.

I'm currently in 54th place out of 70 players. I checked my round rating and saw that it was an unofficial 862. I can do better than that, but I guess I could have done worse. I'm going to have to play smarter tomorrow.

Tomorrow at Down Under will be a good opportunity for me to move.

I'm Here

Got to Kansas City this morning. I had planed to play the course at Pleasant Hill but the traffic on 435 was really thick when I drove through. I did play Rosedale (holes 5-17) and Down Under (2-18) before heading to the hotel. Rosedale is longer than I thought it would be. It's not going to be an easy scoring course. I'm going to have to rely on my approach game.

Down Under is....well....tight, if you know what I mean. A lot tighter than the beginning of the back nine at Bistineau. This course is thick with trees. And elevation....if the fairway isn't up and down, you are looking at a steep drop off to one side. On two or three holes I had to spend ten to fifteen minutes searching for discs. I'm going to have to play smart on this one. Take the chances when I can....and just play for position when the long shot isn't there.

Player's meeting tonight....first round in the morning. I'll post again when I can.

Kansas

Sitting in a hotel room in El Dorado, Kansas (close to Wichita.) Going to leave for Kansas City early...probably before 7 a.m. tomorrow. My plan is to hit the Rosedale courses (Top and Down Under) in the morning before Dad's flight arrives. Once he leaves the airport I will head out to Pleasant Hill, the course that hosts my final two rounds. That makes me feel good because in just one day I will have seen the courses for five of my six rounds.

I will throw some tomorrow...just to loosen up a little. Probably won't play a full round though.

It's so close that I can smell it now.

Rainout

A rain-out for practice today....except for putting. Strong thunderstorms in the area kept me from going to the course. Putted for a while outside....followed my routine....did well when I stuck to it.

I think I am ready....don't know if I'll play any more rounds before the tourney. I think that a little forehand practice with the mids will do....along with putting practice until Thursday night.

I am ready.

Ford Park Red

Played red tees at Ford Park today. Shot 63. Satisfied. I know I can shoot 60 there....maybe 59.

The Destroyer flew well today...as did the 150 Avenger. Approaches are getting better and better. Putting was better.

Note to self: Throw the 150 Avenger on open uphill shots.
Another note to self: Trust the putt....set, clear, push, follow up. (just something for me to remember)
One more note to self: On tee shots....visualize, set, clear, smooth, follow through. (something else for me to remember)

Although I didn't shoot great today, I do feel good about my game. I can compete with these guys. I will compete with these guys.

That's all for today.

Clyde Fant

Played 37 holes at Clyde Fant today. Didn't really keep score, but I think I was one over after 18 and even for the rest. My putting was up and down....my drives were mainly down. Approaches worked as they have lately. The temperature was around 90 but the heat seemed to get to me more than normal. I drank four liters of water and was still thirsty after I finished.

Going to have to play next week....maybe mini tournaments....but at least two rounds. Gotta practice also....putting and approaches.....I may be depending on the short game at the Worlds.

One week.

Lake Bistineau

I've been throwing a little at work the last couple of days...backhand and forehand. Putting practice at home for a little while each night. Nothing spectacular on the driving. Putting has been good....reduced number of putters to two....Rhyno and Classic Roc.

Last night, while putting my discs in milk cartons for transport, I noticed that my Destroyer and Surge were missing. I remembered that I had thrown them at work....knew exactly where they were. This morning I woke at 5:30 and drove to the office....they were still there. Really happy that somebody didn't pick them up.

Went to Lake Bisteneau after finding the discs. Played one round. Several very good shots made on approaches. Hole 3....drive caught the moss in the "window" and dove to the ground right past the ditch. That left me with an uphill approach of at least 100 feet. I picked a spot above and to the right of the basket and put a firm throw on the Classic Roc. Faded right into the basket. On hole 8 my drive hit a limb in a tree on the right side of the fairway...fell to a spot similar in distance as my hole 3 approach. Firm throw again with the Classic Roc....hit chains and bounced out. Hole 17....Classic Roc from a little less than 100 feet....fading toward the basket when it hit moss and dropped. Would have been close.

Holes 10-12 are the hardest on this course....very much like the photos I've seen of Rosedale Down Under in Kansas City....wooded, tight, technical. Finished those three in ten strokes....not really bad, but not great either. I'm satisfied with that score.

Going to putt again this evening. Want to go to Ford Park for practice tomorrow but after watching the British Open today I may stay home and see if Tom Watson can win. He's ahead after three rounds.....almost 60 years old. Would really like to see him win.

Hot

I was going to go to Ford Park this afternoon, but the heat has been stifling. Haven't been drinking water today....still no water at work. I will, however, putt right before dark.

I'll take my discs to work tomorrow....will go to Ford Park after work to practice the forehand on midranges and short approaches.

Long day at work....

First....water leak outside my building.....50 year old fitting just gave out.....lots of water outside.....none inside....won't have water until some time tomorrow. Second....no electricity....replacing 50 year old electrical service and panel.....won't have electricity until tomorrow.....HOT. Finally, had to remove shelves that I had just stocked and inventoried....will have to find another place to put them to make room for new electrical panel. No electricity. No Water. No Air Conditioning. Temperature outside over 100 degrees.

Now....I was thinking about playing in the weekly mini tournament at Clyde Fant. Won't do that now....too much heat for the day. Will putt though.

On the subject of putting, I tossed the Classic Roc yesterday for a little while....did well with it. Will take one Rhyno and the Classic Roc out tonight an putt alternate putts with them to see which one does better. I may end up putting the CR in the bag for my backup putter....just in case the Rhyno isn't hitting.

Down Under Practice

My practice is, at this time, mainly focused on preparations for playing Rosedale Down Under.

Went to Ford Park again today....for about 1-1/2 hours each day. Did not play a round of golf....just went to the area of holes 2 and 3. Threw mainly midranges with a few fairway drivers. Tried forehand and backhand but forehand was the most effort was placed. Buzzes did well....Wasps and USDGC Roc need work. Once I got used to them, the Star Whippet-X did well when flicked for a hard right fade.

Backhand wasn't going very well until I tried some 150 class today. I turned down the power and the TeeBird, Sidewinder, and SOLS did fine....going to have to pick up the practice on those. I'm going to keep up this type of practice....maybe do a little at work also. I don't want to get rusty on my distance drives though...going to have to play rounds at least two times a week....maybe three.

Two Weeks

Two weeks to go.

Went to Clyde Fant yesterday. Shot 54. Didn't putt well....approaches were on target. Drives were good overall.

Practiced at Ford Park this morning. Played baskets 2 and 3 from different locations in the woods. I'm doing this in preparation for Rosedale Down Under. Down Under is the second course in Rosedale Park (Kansas City). It reminds me of holes 10-12 at Bisteneau.....tight wooded holes. I believe that all holes at DU are less than 300'. If I play safely and do not get greedy, I think that I can shoot well there.

My practice today was satisfactory....first wooded situation played in a while....and first time for forehand drives and approaches in a long time. Plan is to do the same on M-W-F until I leave. Rounds will be played on Sat-Sun and maybe one day during the week.

Ford Park (again)

Played today with Kevin Pelton, DJ Foshee and a few others who I don't know too well.

We played the alternate course....blue tees when they weren't combined with a concrete tee and reds when blue/concrete were together for the most part except for a couple of holes. Shot a 57 which was good, but not great. My scrambling was on....saved at least four strokes. Putts were up and down....not on today. Approaches were on target again.....drives were up and down.

Shots of the day....

Hole 3 (Red): Drive hit a tree around 100 feet from tee. Forehand approach with Star Whippet X left me with a slightly uphill putt of about 35 feet. Hit it for a par save.

Hole 7 (Blue): Drive hit the tree on right just in front of tee. I haven't hit that tree in over a year. Second drive (15 feet in front of the tee) left me with a 45 foot putt. Kevin mentioned that my shot seemed at first to have landed closer to the hole. I agreed and said "it doesn't matter....this one's going in." I made the putt.

Hole 15 (Blue): Drive was around 300...maybe a little further. Left me with a 150 foot approach which had trees on the right-front. Wasn't a backhand situation. I thought about a forehand with the Whippet but chose the thumber with the same. Threw low under a branch....hit short and skipped next to the basket....slid about 20 feet past. Made the putt.

Several other shots helped me out....but those were the best.

Three weeks to go.

Ford Park

Played concrete tees....shot 58....tied my personal record. I missed several make-able putts and missed a couple of 70 foot and over putts by just a little bit. Holes four and eighteen got me....shot 5 on each. Eighteen should have been a four....my first drive left me against a pine tree. I couldn't follow through on the second shot....was left with an approach of around 240 feet....threw the tee-bird....hit a tree. My fourth shot (QMS) was headed straight for the basket and clipped a limb just five feet away...landed net to the pin.

The QMS has just won a spot in my bag as my medium straight approach disc.....I guess that's why they call it the Quantum Medium Straight.

I'm happy with today's round.

Clyde Fant

Played Clyde Fant today...wish they would mow. The grass is getting high and is preventing any slides or skips. Today wasn't as hot as it has been....high 80's in mid-morning.

Shot an average round......53. Driving was okay except for several bad throws that kept me from having a chance at birdie. The Destroyer has been on the mark the last two days.

Midranges and approaches were dead on again....I am happy with that. Putting was good...happy there also.

Hydrated last night and drank water between every hole....felt better after the round.

Threw Buzzes and Wasps at the practice basket from the picnic table between 3 and 4. Parked every one of them.

Clyde Fant

Haven't played...or practiced much other than putting....because of the heat. Played this morning at Clyde Fant....scored a 51 with two or three missed opportunities. Drives were good except for one or two. Approaches were dead on. Putts were made.

Felt good...stayed hydrated. Wind was blowing a little, which helped with the heat. Two things that I think will be part of my packing list will be (1) umbrella for rain and shade, and (2) Ice Bag kept in a cooler on my cart. An ice bag on the back of the neck may be the thing.

Going to play again tomorrow....don't know where yet....will post.

Monday, June 8, 2009

Midrange Day

Threw midranges today at lunch....Buzzz, Wasp, and QMS. All did well backhand....the QMS really surprised me with the line....straight as an arrow...little, if any fade. Buzzz(es) and Wasps were accurate at up to 200 feet. Tried forehand at 100 feet with some success....will have to practice more at this.

Dad and I are going to Bistineau tomorrow after work. Adam White and (maybe) Joal McKenzie are meeting us there. I really need a break from Ford Park. Bistineau should indicate whether I'm heading in the right direction.

Putted for about 15 minutes in the back yard tonight....did well, but missed a few due to not following pre-shot routine. Have to get my head right with putting.

Plan for action

I've got to formulate some sort of plan for preparation for the tournament. Lately, I've been throwing my putters for accuracy at 100-200 feet. This has seemed to improve my approaches so I'll continue that. I may do the same with my midranges but from 150-250 feet. I also need to practice my forehand approaches.

Not sure how I'm going to do all of this....I've been throwing at lunch for 30-45 minutes. I'll look at alternating days for putters/midranges.

I'll probably putt three days a week also.

Will I have time to play?

Here we go....

Don't really know how to start this....guess I'll just go for it....

From July 27th to August 1st of 2009, Dad and I will be playing in the Professional Disc Golf Association World Championships in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas. In the beginning I had planned to act as a Caddie for Dad in the Pro Legends Division, but he talked me into playing. I entered the Advanced (Amateur) Grandmasters Division and will be playing against 71 other 50-59 year old men....most of them possessing better skills than I.

I won't win this one....the skills just are not there at this time...but I do think that I can make a good showing....maybe middle-of-the-pack. I'll be happy with that.

Dad, however, is another story.....he has a very good chance at winning it all against his division. I know that I'll be there as his Caddie if he makes the finals on the last day of play.

I'll be posting as we prepare....
